Regular breakfast............for breakfast
Why is the world so transfixed on a high carbohydrate, low fat breakfast?
Save for all you “steak and eggs” folks………Most of us have room for improvement.
When I work with clients on revamping their diet and lifestyle, breakfast is typically the first place I start. It really does set the foundation for the day. By starting the day with the standard coffee and cereal, your gonna take a long ride on the blood sugar rollercoaster. Your hormones try to control the rollercoaster throughout the day, instead of contributing to more health giving processes (repair, digest, etc.)
“Breakfast food” is nothing but a culturally ingrained habit. In fact this is one of the habits that makes the US 37th in overall health in the world…..A close battle with Slovenia!
We have breakfast for dinner at some restaurants, so why not have dinner for breakfast?
Can you think of any REAL reason for this? Any reason why we feel a need to stuff ourselves with sugar and processed foods in the morning? Instead of feeding ourselves REAL food for breakfast, we substute all kinds of processed psuedo foods that won’t give your body a lick of nutrition.
I can’t find any good reason for it, so I’ve discarded the need for ‘breakfast food’ in my routine.
This is yesterday’s morning fare for me;

Curry Lamb, with Radishes and Strawberries
The Curry lamb was made the night before, and I just chopped some radishes and strawberries and threw ‘em on the plate. It took more time to arrange it and take the picture than it did to prepare. To this I also had a few tablespoons of raw almond butter, because the lamb was fairly lean, and I needed some more fat in my meal.
Certainly, this meal is not normal breakfast fare for us……………But it’s well proportioned, healthy, and fast.
Today I had chicken thighs from the night before, asparagus, and more strawberries. That’ll keep me rockin’ well into lunch, whereas if I had cereal, I’d be on a sugar-low-food-rage at about 10am.
Because I often don’t have time to make a huge breakfast or dinner, I always make double the portions. That way, even if your cooking for a family, you’ve got an extra meal on the backburner in case your pressed for time. I like it because it cuts down on cleanup too.
So in this way, I often eat whatever I had for dinner the night before……for breakfast!
Try experimenting with higher protein and fat meals in the morning, you’ll probably find that your energy is much more stable throughout the day. The higher fat content will act as a ‘rev-limiter’ for your blood sugar……it takes much longer to digest fat, so it will provide you with a much longer lasting source of energy than your cheerios.
Don’t want Curried lamb for breakfast? Try these more subtle changes;
-Guacamole with your eggs…….or just by itself!
-Add in some flax or cod liver oil to your morning, it will help control blood sugar throughout the day
-Ten minutes to spare? Broil a grass-fed steak.
-Add some raw cheeses to breakfast…..Try something mild to start with
-Toss a whole chicken in the crockpot overnight (low setting), and eat chicken soup in the morning.
Experiment with it and see how you feel-
