Shoes for Happy Feet

Meet the new brainchild of Vibram, the Five Fingers

Minimalism at it’s best…..These shoes are skins for your feet, complete with toe holes (and strange looks from passerbys!)

We do a lot of work with flat arches, so these shoes are a real dream come true!

Walking around in regular shoes today makes for “dumb feet”. Flat feet, cramped toes, lessened dexterity, and of course……pain and discomfort.

Our feet are complicated shock absorbers designed to handle force in many different directions. Strapping shoes on these beauties makes for muscle imbalance of the lower leg, and on up the chain. The feet can be extremely dexterous, I found this out when I saw women in Dominica weaving baskets with their feet!

How do you keep your feet healthy, strong and dexterous?

  • Start by walking around barefoot as much as possible. Not only will your house be a lot cleaner, but you’ll help the muscles of your lower leg and feet to keep moving properly.
  • Try walking around in a grassy field with uneven terrain, if you need more of a challenge, close your eyes and take extremely slow steps (think tai-chi pace)
  • Sitting on the couch? Put some marbles in a bowl, pick them up with your toes and place them in another bowl. That’ll help wake up some of those little muscles.
  • Get some Five Fingers and hike, run, climb, whatever! They’re my new chosen shoe for the gym, and all other athletic endeavors.  I never thought simply walking could be so fun, seriously!

  • [...] Take your shoes off: Going barefoot helps keep the structures of the foot healthy by building up the metatarsal ligaments and muscles.  These are the muscles that are the shock absorbers of the foot.  With a natural arch, the foot acts to put a good spring back into your step.  And if you’re a weightlifter, building a strong foundation in the feet will increase all your overhead presses in a short amount of time.  You can accomplish the same thing with the Vivo Barefoot shoes, or the Vibram Five Fingers.  [...]

  • [...] Aside from amazing stories, the book holds a place in my heart because of the long breakdown of why modern running shoes are just plain terrible for running.  If you want to wake up your feet and become a much stronger runner in the meantime, ditch your shoes and start going barefoot…..or get a pair of these.
